Te Lovers Newsletter - Crepes and Teas and Holidays!

Farming family Cajuns aren't exactly known as globetrotters, so it was a rare opportunity indeed when Kevin, at the young age of 14, found a chance to travel through Europe.  On this trip, he had his first taste of beer while in a Munich beer hall, and his first crepe on the streets of Paris (he also had his first real kiss while strolling along the Seine - now if he can only remember her name!).

He's never had a beer nor a crepe that's tasted near as good ever since.   :)

So, when Connie and team expressed a wish to serve crepes - an ideal light food complement to tea - at their new tea house, Kevin interjected, "then you're going to have to make real crepes, like the ones I had in Paris.  Served on a street corner, wrapped in a paper cone, still steaming hot from the griddle".  Driven by the challenge, Connie indeed found a real French griddle, and borrowed a crepe batter recipe from one of her dear French friends.

He's not sure if it's the griddle or the recipe, but Kevin was surprised to discover authentic French crepes again, as good as those Paris street-corner crepes of many years past!  Yummy!

We're proud of our tasty Te House of Tea crepes, and everyone who's tried them have raved about their fresh taste and delicious ingredients (see for example, this wonderful blogger's writeup and photos: "eatyet.wordpress.com":http://eatyet.wordpress.com/2008/01/23/te-house-of-tea/ ).  But, perhaps because of our awkward menu design, they aren't ordered nearly as often as their deliciousness suggests.  So, we've done a little menu re-design, and are introducing several new crepes today.  Perfect timing too, because in France February 2nd - "La Chandeleur" - is popularly known as "Crepe Day".  Here's a sampling from our new crepe menu:

The Holidays Never Stop!

Not to be outdone by the French, the British have their own crepe holiday, which they call Pancake Day.Tuesday, February 5th as well.

Pancake Day falls on the Tuesday before the start of Lent (known by us Cajuns as "Mardi Gras"), and is a popular day to get your fill of crepes before the long lenten season.  Our crepe specials will be good on this

And then there's Thursday, February 8: Chinese New Years!  This is a very special holiday to us - our most special holiday, in fact.  New Years in Chinese communities is a big affair, lasting several days, with daily celebrations representing different fortuitous occasions.  It's a time to sweep out the old and welcome good fortune and health for the coming year.

We'll be giving out Chinese New Years sweets on Thursday and following days.  So, enjoy the drink that was invented in China along with some interesting and adventurous candies during our very special holiday.

Oh ... if you or a loved one happen to be staying at the Rotary House this Monday, February 5, please drop in the lobby between 5 pm and 6:30 pm for a tea tasting hosted by Connie and Kevin and M.D. Andersen Guest Relations.

Reserve ahead for our Valentine's Day special.  We've made a special menu for you and your loved one: a panini of your choice, a heart-shaped crepe with sweet caramel, spiced pecan and apple pieces, a tray bake and your choice of tea, we'll pull out the fine china to make this is very special ocassion.  Reserve ahead, for lunch between 11:30 am and 2 pm on February 14.

New Teas

Several new shipments arrived last week, replenishing our holiday-ravaged shelves with all our old favorites.  And, we've discovered a few new teas as well:
  • Linden - the health benefits of flowers from the legendary linden tree are well-known and many.  Linden tea has an interesting, tasty flavor by itself, or blended with any of our lighter green teas.
  • Korakundah Nilgiri - another plantation tea from the Blue Mountains of India, this fine black tea is organic and fair trade certified.  Has a brisk, clean-tasting flavor.
  • Dynasty Puerh - a top-quality, aged Puerh from China.  Puerhs are earthy, with complex tastes that change upon every steeping of the tea.  Try sipping the liquour after just 30 seconds, and compare to its taste at 2 minutes and 5 minutes.  You may be surprised!
Happy New Years!
