Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival party

The weather's been clear the past few days in Houston, so we're sure you've noticed that the moon is almost full now.  It will be a complete Full Moon this Friday, October 6, and that means ... it's time for the the Chinese Moon Festival!Moon

Many cultures have some sort of "Harvest Moon" tradition.  China itself has a quite interesting such tradition, maybe more elaborate than most harvest festivals.  It involves royal intrigue, immortality, and a lady on the moon!  And, it's celebrated with tea, delicious moon cakes, and the lighting of fanciful paper lanterns (which the kids love).   Connie has written a personal recollection, so be sure to read her story here: www.lacobie.org/MidAutumnFestival.html.

Té will have its own exciting celebration of this tradition, starting at 8 pm this Friday, with tea and moon cakes; and when the sun sets, the lighting of the lanterns.  Bring your kids -- they always get a delight out of the lanterns (many in the shape of different animals, or dragons), and at the end of the celebration we'll have a surprise for them!

Linda Gilbert

We are proud to be displaying photographs from Linda Gilbert's new exhibit, "The Idaho Series, Part Two".  Linda Gilbert is a neighbor and an oboist with the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras.  Read more about her and the exhibit on our Exhibits page.  The exhibit will be on display from October 3 to October 31, so come on by anytime to get a view, and show your support for our local artists!

New Fall teas

Are you starting to feel that next cold or flu sneaking up on you?!  Strengthen yourself from the blahs with plenty of exercise, good nutrition, and a sampling of traditional herbs.  Connie has whipped up a new tea for us, with a recipe from her youth in Hong Kong:
  • Wisconsin Ginseng Green with Red Dates
Yes, Wisconsin ginseng.  In China, American ginseng is prized for its calming effect, and as an antidote to "hot air", while Korean ginseng is known for its energy-boosting effects, and its balance against "cold air".  A green tea with American ginseng and rich red dates is good for balancing that over-excited body of yours, especially one that's under attack from the environment.  Try it out sometime!

And a dear friend from Greece told us, "oh, you have to have Greek Mountain Tea in your shop", and she's finally managed to import this for us.  The "mountain tea" is an interesting, healthful herb, the Sideritis plant, and is well-known in all Greek households, as being an ailment "for most anything that ails."   Sideritis is high in anti-oxidants, and is also an anti-inflammatory, good for reducing fevers.  Yes, it is the chicken soup of Greek culture :) .

  • Greek Mountain Herbal Tea
As the winter weather gets more serious, we'll be brewing up some more herbal concoctions.  So, watch this space for the latest :)

We look forward to seeing you all this Friday!
